Rebozos de la Frontera: Dia/Noche
2001
Fabric, safety pins, barbed wire, 9" x 45”
The Mexican Museum, San Francisco, CA, Permanent Collection
As I approached the fourth decade, the need to weave a rebozo grew stronger. As an indigenous woman of the Americas, I felt it necessary to not only know how to weave a rebozo, but to actually weave the rebozo! No time, running late, getting ahead, why not safety pin the rebozo! Faster, easier, cheaper, soups!! Wait a minute, if you look Mexican AND you wear a rebozo, Alert! Alert! ICE has its eye on you!! Quickly, make a rebozo with colors that blend into the desert landscape at night and in the evening.
