In the nineties, California toyed with the idea of making English the official state language: the only language spoken, written, and learned in the state of California. I researched and found a map of languages spoken in California in the late 1800s. Languages from the East Coast, Northern Pole, and Central America were spoken here. I color-coded each distinct family with their sub sets. It is noted that the indigenous citizen spoke 10-12 languages to navigate relationships with their neighbors. I wondered if civilization opened or closed our minds…
