Undocumented Border X-ings. Xewa (Flower) Time

2016
Mixed media installation, The Textile Museum, George Washington University, Washington, DC
27’ x 27’ x 5”
See time-lapse video of this installation here
Falling into an artwork is an incredible experience.  It rates with falling inside the sweet fragrance of a rose.  You fall into an open world of light, sweetness, and Good.

Understanding “US/MX “ border politics is the other side of “falling in”.  When you “see” the ecological disaster that is being constructed in the southwest, you feel hopeless and helpless, like falling into a whirlpool of Darkness, the more you understand, the deeper the fall.

The viewer is invited to enter the world of “Flower Time.”
The American Beauty rose is the official flower of the District of Columbia. In the installation, the DC area is bordered with a clear and distinct barbed wire border. Almost pretty.

The American Beauty is hosting her state flower cousins from the borderlands: California poppy, Arizona saguaro, New Mexico yucca, and the Texas bluebonnet. The visiting state flowers have come to Washington, DC, hoping the American Beauty can influence the policy makers that reside in her region. The flowers live on both sides of the US/MX border wall.  All are undocumented, and are referred to as “illegal aliens.”  Worse yet, their homelands are becoming wastelands.

In any important meeting regarding the ecological health of the Earth Mother, Elders are present. Meso-America is represented with an architectural presence. The numerous languages that were spoken when John Smith first entered the Washington, DC region, are carefully written in a fragile and ghostly text, near the front. Their Spirits are also present, acting as semi-hosts.

Even the mighty sturgeons, who up until the 1970s, swam alongside the dinosaurs, freely, from continent to continent, undocumented, up and down the great Potomac and Anacostia Rivers, even they are present at this flower meeting.

Everyone is either oblivious or ignoring the full-scale grid net that is covering all.

The Flower Powers have gathered, let the conversation begin…
